N.Y.C. - Weather Report - Weather Report (Vinyl, LP, Album)

Mr Gone was disappointing. I played it again after someone on here did a thread on most disappointing albums or some such Night Passage came as a relief that WR were back to something like their best and the live show that went with it was simply brilliant. I came out afterwards with such a buzz. The rest of them I picked up over a short period so I have no history with them when they were released. Oh, it really could be any of them The early WRs really could just be described as electric avant-garde rather than jazz-rock.

Took me a while to warm up to the poppier Sweetnighter, but I truly love that record now. I must be the only one out there who found Jaco to be annoying in the way he pushed himself to the front of the band, although it was sad to also watch him decompensate with severe bipolar disease. I liked Jaco and in those pre-Internet mid 80's I spent a few years wondering why we weren't hearing much from such a great player. It seems that Weather Report has become this forgotten, unhip group over the years which is a real shame IMO. While some of the sounds employed on the records could be considered dated Fender Rhodes, the "Jaco" bass sound - the ideas behind the music are consistently engaging.
