The booklet is excellent too - I had to read it through in one go! Words fail me when I try to sum up the music of Anthony Phillips. His approach to music, his love of romantic harmony and musical form informed the early music of a band called Genesis and his influence is present on the albums From Genesis to Revelation and Trespass and can still be heard, I believe, in the albums that followed; particularly Nursery Cryme, Foxtrot and Selling England by the Pound.
Anthony's music ranges from rock to orchestral, New Age to TV documentary, descriptive to immersive. This set endeavours to cover all of the bases though I think it is a little bit too large and sprawling to act as an introduction to his music, more as a summation of his career up to the point of release. That compilation contained 15 tracks including the hitherto unreleased Trail of Tears and Erotic Strings.
Choosing material from all of these releases is a huge undertaking but it does give an idea of the breadth of territory that Anthony has covered over these years and with the inclusion of unreleased material it is a must-buy for fans of Anthony Phillips and a great overview for anyone wanting to explore his work. Anthony's handful of commercial releases are heavily represented here with around 20 minutes of music taken from each of the albums The Geese and the Ghost, Wise After the Event, Sides and Tarka plus sizeable extracts from Invisible Men and Slow Dance.
If I were to make selections there would be differences but this collection contains nearly all of the tracks that I would have considered essential so one of the five stars awarded here goes to the compiler of this set. The disc holders are poorly designed as the discs can rub against each other as they are removed or replaced. Fantastic box Set. Great selection of Ant's material and some unheard stuff including the rare original Silver song recording and a mike Rutherford B side.
Very good booklet with Ant's history fully covered. And yes there is a problem with the disc holders, the cd's just don't want to come out? All is ok. Beautiful product. Lots of care has gone into the booklet and artwork, and the content is detailed and generous.
Lovely music. Unless you are familiar already with his output, this set feels to me like I found a treasure. Plenty of material to dip yourself into, presented in a very eye-catching 5 CD set with a wonderful booklet which details every track, discography, photos, LP artworks and extensive liner notes.
Then I saw this box set in Amazon, and like a good old day record buyer, I was drawn to it by just looking at the cover artwork. So I did what I usually do when I don't know an artist: I downloaded a few songs, listen to them and I was hooked right away. So I ordered the set. So is to those people who still don't know him quite well, except as an ex member of the great early Genesis that I'm reviewing this item.
The nine minute K2 is overlong and uneventful. I Saw You Today sees Ant taking to the microphone, otherwise this album is entirely instrumental. When the epic suite which opens the album starts, I was submerged with such a great feeling: grandiose and bombastic intro "Salmon Lead". I was rather charmed and curious to listen more of it. Unfortunately this long suite is more a collage of short parts with no real liaison between them. The longest part from this "suite" is a chance to discover Anthony's maestria on the acoustic guitar.
It almost sounds as? I guess you know who. This track is really a marvel of delicacy and it is sooooo melodic. My fave part from this work probably. And that's so great! The "Scottish Suite" ends up on a quiet and relaxing note piano mainly. If I had to rate this part only from this album, four stars would be definitely granted.
The songs that complete the album are quite different: from very short "interlude" tracks that are not really necessary to splendid and ambient passages like during the emotional "K2" which is very much Schulze oriented or TD is you prefer. The same sort of music can be experienced during the well named "Heavens". Some usual and obvious acoustic guitar track are of course featured "Spring meeting" or "Nocturne".
Inside the cover of the program was an Annie Leibovitz photo of Bradlee, shirt unbuttoned, on a beach; underneath the photo was a New Testament passage. The constant theme was Bradlees fearlessness.
He pulled off being Bradlee because he wasnt afraid, Carl Bernstein said. Of presidents. Of polio. Of political correctness. Of publishing the Pentagon Papers. Of going off to war in the Pacic. Of making mistakes. Bernstein contrasted that with the current environment, when too many of us run afraid. Quinn Bradlee, who has faced health issues throughout his life, spoke about how his father taught me that hardships actually make a life more interesting.
A stepdaughter, Rosamond Casey, read from Bradlees favorite poem, William Ernest Henleys Invictus, which Bradlee may have heard while suffering from polio at age And Ben Jr. He was not introspective in the least. He felt guilt about certain aspects of his life, but he didnt dwell long if at all on personal failure. As David Remnick once wrote in the New Yorker, Dad gave the lie to Socrates idea that the unexamined life is not worth living. Whatever the quality was, it turned him, as Woodward put it, into a journalistic warrior.
Said the Watergate icon, He wanted his newspaper to be like the Navy destroyer he served on in World War II: Make a big bow wave and leave a roiling, churning wake. And dont let the dickheads get you down. Dana Milbank is a Washington Post columnist.

Ben Bradlee: Inspiring, irreverent and braveare collected and framed, to harvest huge amounts of information, to build the frameworks through which the rest of us make decisions and to steer our choices. If you think this power will be used for entirely benign ends, then you have not read enough history.
The second implication is philosophical. Our identity as humans is shaped by what machines and other animals cant do. For the last few centuries, reason was seen as the ultimate human faculty. But now machines are better at many of the tasks we associate with thinking like playing chess, winning at Jeopardy, and doing math. On the other hand, machines cannot beat us at the things we do without conscious thinking: developing tastes and affections, mimicking each other and building emotional attachments, experiencing imaginative breakthroughs, forming moral sentiments.
In the age of smart machines, were not human because we have big brains. Were human because we have social skills, emotional capacities and moral intuitions. I could paint two divergent A. In the humanistic one, machines liberate us from mental drudgery so we can focus on higher and happier things. In this future, differences in innate IQ are less important. Everybody has Google on their phones so having a great memory or the ability to calculate with big numbers doesnt help as much.
In this future, there is increasing emphasis on personal and moral faculties: being likable, industrious, trustworthy and affectionate. People are evaluated more on these traits, which supplement machine thinking, and not the rote ones that duplicate it. In the cold, utilitarian future, on the other hand, people become less idiosyncratic. If the choice architecture behind many decisions is based on big data from vast crowds, everybody follows the prompts and chooses to be like each other.
The machine prompts us to consume what is popular, the things that are easy and mentally undemanding. Im happy Pandora can help me nd what I like.
Im a little nervous if it so pervasively shapes my listening that it ends up determining what I like. I think we all want to master these machines, not have them master us.

Conned to an unheated tent in a parking lot, she insisted she had been misdiagnosed, hired a lawyer and launched a media campaign. Christie tried to bluster his way through, insisting that the nurse was suffering from a high fever. She wasnt. But on Monday, the governor backed down and let her go home to Maine insisting, of course, that he hadnt backed down at all.
Christie messed with the wrong redhead, Hickoxs boyfriend said. Meanwhile, in New York, Cuomo relaxed some of the initial quarantine rules he had imposed. At the moment, with no new Ebola cases for several days, its starting to seem possible that the federal government has nally gotten its act together and the governors will nd a sensible if not entirely happy medium.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued a straightforward recommendation on quarantines that classies returning travelers on a scale from high risk to low risk, and establishes monitoring rules according to their classication.
Highrisk people those who had direct contact with an Ebola patients body uids should avoid public contact for 21 days, be checked daily by a medical professional and be barred from commercial travel or public gatherings.
Anyone with less exposure to the virus should be monitored too, but under far fewer restrictions. Dont put everybody in the same bucket, Dr. Anthony Fauci of the National Institutes of Health explained.
Sounds reasonable. But you have to wonder what took them so long. The rules would have made sense and been more reassuring if they had been issued weeks ago. And they might have prevented politicians from feeling they had to step so far into medical territory.
But theres one bit of good news: The publics fears may soon start to ebb because Ebola is starting to look less terrifying when patients get good medical care in U. The death rate from the disease in West Africa has been estimated at a terrifying 70 percent or higher. But thats in a part of Africa where medical care often comes late or not at all. In the United States, the only patient to die so far was Thomas Eric Duncan, who didnt receive treatment initially when he reported symptoms of the disease.
Several of the American patients who have recovered were given experimental drugs, but not all and doctors say they dont know whether the drugs made a differ ence. Some, including Dallas nurse Amber Vinson, recovered largely on their own, with only supportive care hospital monitoring to maintain their bodies uids and electrolytic balances. The CDC treatment guidelines are spare. No FDA-approved vaccine or medicine is available, the center says.
Recovery from Ebola depends on good supportive care and the patients immune response. Its likely there will be more Ebola cases in the United States. But its possible that the epidemic of fear is starting to ebb, and that will make dealing with the disease itself a lot easier for politicians and medical personnel alike.
Readers may reach him at doyle. The governor and the former governor should be restricted to their homes unless Election Day, instead of continuing to travel the state and needlessly exposing Floridians to their lack-of-infectious charms.
With a majority of the public clearly frightened of both men, the last thing we need to do now is to allow them to engage in constant travel across the state during the next several days, as they attempt to come into close contact with as many Floridians as possible before next Tuesdays nal vote. We need to listen to the political science here. Despite millions of dollars of advertising and the non-stop hemorrhaging of money over the last several months, its extremely unlikely practically impossible for reluctant voters to contract the Rick Scott or Charlie Crist fever at this point.
The chance of infectious enthusiasm for Scott and Crist was far more likely during the early stages of the campaign, but by now, the immune system of Floridians to both men is nearly impenetrable. As for Scott, people have been known to go for years without showing the slightest sign of warming up to him. And Crist has experienced so many mutations over his long political career that practically everyone in Florida, regardless of political party, has developed Crist antibodies.
Theres something else to consider, too. The political immune system of Floridians during non-presidential years is especially strong. And both Scott and Crist have been signicantly weakened by televised debates, attack ads, and their general lack of sincerity. On the other hand, both men have frightened Florida voters. And justiably so. And we need to acknowledge that fear and do something about it. To allow them to run rampant in Florida unless Election Day doesnt make sense.
Its not going to get them one extra vote. Instead, it will only make Floridians even more cynical than they already are.
So we cant just sit by and do nothing, allowing Scott and Crist to ride buses and carry on as if we didnt realize that they are vectors of a malignant political disease.
This is a time for action, even if its just the symbolic kind. Public opinion would prefer that both Scott and Crist be conned to an isolation ward. But that may be going over board and turn out to be counterproductive. Sure, locking up Crist and Scott will adequately address our current problem. But it might send the wrong message to future candidates, who may decide they dont want to bother running for ofce if it will mean being conned to an elections ofce storage room with nothing but energy bars and a port-a-potty.
So instead, we should take the humane route and simply require Scott and Crist to self-quarantine themselves in their own homes until Tuesday. While there, they would be monitored twice a day by visits from representatives from the League of Women Voters, who will monitor their political vital signs. Scott will be asked if he continues to base his campaign on the gross misstatement that Charlie Crists tenure as Floridas Republican governor from to caused the loss of more than , jobs in Florida when it is abundantly clear that those job losses were a casualty of the global nancial meltdown caused by the conversion of unsecured mortgage loans across the country into fraudulent, unregulated Wall Street securities.
And Crist will be asked twice a day if he is still a Democrat. Doing this will not only help Floridians, but it will free up New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie to deal with Ebola preparedness in his state and allow former President Bill Clinton to spend more time with his new granddaughter. Indiana, Hwy. Christopher Wayne Sherrod, 24, of Mark Twain Lane, is facing two counts each of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon on law enforcement and violation of probation; along with one count each of fleeing to elude, armed burglary, grand theft, possession of a rearm by a convicted felon, grand theft of a motor vehicle, grand theft of a rearm, credit card theft and failure to register as a convicted felon.
His charges stem from events that were called to the attention of law enforcement just after midnight, stretching into the early morning hours Friday.
According to the sheriffs report, a deputy rst took note of a white Ford Escape speeding down Sunnybrook Boulevard at 56 mph in a 35 mph zone. The vehicle failed to stop for the deputy, who broke off the pursuit after he got the tag number. Another deputy saw the Escape driving without its headlights on a little later on Gulfstream Boulevard.
When the second deputy tried to pull the vehicle over, its lights popped on and it sped away, but not before the deputy veried it had the same tag as in the earlier incident. A third deputy spotted the SUV at a gas station on South McCall Road, the report shows, after which the driver sped straight at the deputy in his patrol car while he idled at an inter section, narrowly veering off before a headon collision.
Deputies contacted the vehicle owners daughter, who usually drove the SUV, and learned the Escape, along with her debit card and handgun, were missing from her home, in which Sherrod had been staying that night, according to the report. Deputies soon after were investigating a burglary at a Grove City business, in which the front doors glass was shattered. Surveillance video reportedly showed a familiar white Ford Escape pulling up around a. More encounters between the SUV and deputies saw the Escape speeding down McCall, eeing from law enforcement after being spotted on Beach Road, overcoming stop sticks and crossing into Sarasota County and back into Charlotte, then along Veterans and Peachland boulevards, onto Interstate 75 south, onto U.
The driver reportedly had lunged at one more deputy back on McCall in Englewood, attempting to ram the patrol car of the deputy, who was trying to turn to pursue the Escape, and earning the second aggravated assault count. Deputies took the driver, Sherrod, into custody after the car failed near Tuckers Grade, according to the report.
He was taken to the Charlotte County Jail, where he is being held without bond. According to a Sarasota County Sheriffs report, around 5 p. The driver and the passenger then exited the vehicle and began harassing the victims, the report states, pulling on the car door handles. The victims were able to drive away by jumping several curbs and driving over a grassy area, but the suspects reportedly continued to follow them until they approached law enforcement and ed the scene.
Both victims who were able to identify the two attackers as Joseph Edwin Nickell, 19, whose last known address was on the block Yale Road, Venice; and Johnny David Williams, 22, whose last known address was on the block of Gentian Road, Venice said they were terried by the attack.
Nickell and Williams were picked up on war rants Friday, and were charged with two counts each of armed burglary of a conveyance and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, and one count of criminal mischief. Both are being held at the Sarasota County jail without bond.
