In the case of GoGo Penguin, here on their fifth album and with one Mercury Music Prize nomination under their belt, the answer seems to be 'as much as those three musicians want'.
This new collection of jazz-electronic-classical work again showcases how commanding and innovative the trio can be. Combining Chris Illingworth's keys, Rob Turner's percussion and the mournful double bass of Nick Blacka, this self-titled outing is a genuinely epic journey that makes transitioning between styles seem easy, seamlessly nodding to post-rock, ambient, movie score and more.
Technically phenomenal, conceptually innovative and destined to transport listeners with each and every note, if you've not explored these guys before now's the time to get involved.
Black Focus LP. Brownswood UK. With such talent to draw on, you'd expect Black Focus to be rather good. Happily, it is, with the duo delivering a typically London-centric take on jazz funk. That means that they take as much inspiration from the work of Kaidi Tatham as, say, Herbie Hancock. The key to the album's success - and, yes, it is generally as special as Gilles Peterson suggests - is the fluid combination of Dayes' brilliant drumming and Williams' superb synth solos and effortlessly groovy Rhodes playing.
III LP. Numero Group US. Warren's ever-changing 24 Carat Black project delivered some of the finest hybrid soul-jazz music around, with the project's debut album considered something of an underground classic. Sparse but warm, languid and jazzy, it's a leisurely, soft-touch collection of cuts stripped of production trickery but high on dewy-eyed vocals, organic drums and tactile instrumentation. Agogo Austria. Here he blends his Ethio-jazz sounds with the Melbourne-based group Black Jesus Experience to serve up a mix of re-interpreted African folk songs and odes to his homeland.
Another highlight is 'Living On Stolen Land' which is dedicated to the First Nations people of Australia and acknowledges the pain and injustice of them not being recognised as the traditional owners of Australia. Analog Africa Germany. Pop-Makossa shines a light on a glorious but largely overlooked period in the story of Cameroonian makossa, when local musicians began to replace funk and highlife influences with the rubbery bass of classic disco and the sparkling synth flourishes and drum machines of electrofunk.
The resultant compilation, which apparently took eight years to produce, is packed full of brilliant cuts, from the heavily-electronic jauntiness of Pasteur Lappe's "Sanaga Calypso" and horn-totin' Highlife-disco of Emmaniel Kahe and Jeanette Kemogne's "Ye Medjuie", to the dense, organ-laden wig out that is Clement Djimogne's "Africa".
Lovemonk Spain. Surrounded by becalmed harps, spacey electric piano keys, languid double-bass, ear-catching cello and bustling drums, Wickham's breezy flute solos sound like a cosmic call to arms for all those who love the more spiritual side of jazz.
It's a smart blueprint that Wickham and his cohorts happily apply to both up-tempo and downbeat moments, in the process delivering a set of inspired instrumentals that remain accessible entertaining and pleasingly alluring. Brazilian Rhyme 12" 1 per customer. In fact, such is demand that even later bootleg pressings now go for silly money online. As this reissue proves, though, they're arguably amongst Krivit's strongest scalpel works.
Certainly, his three-minute revision of the always too short "Brazilian Rhyme" teases it out to just the right length, in the process delivering a sweltering, sing-along summer anthem.
The flipside revision of the equally as summery "Runnin" is every bit as good, with Krivit making merry with the original's life-affirming scat vocals and killer piano solos.
Why Can't There Be Love 7" reeditado 1 per customer. Luv N'Haight US. Rejoice gram vinyl LP with obi-strip. World Circuit. Allen's instantly recognisable drumming and Masekela's iconic trumpet are a match made in heaven - after all their paths first crossed back in the 70s thanks to Fela Kuti's galvanizing energy. Forget the throwback stuff trying to capture the spirit of the originators, this IS the originators sounding cool and deadly in every way.
Funk lovers, Afrobeat heads, curious ears and dancing souls take heed - this right here is an unmissable transmission from two grandmasters in their field. Guitar accessories. Studio accessories. Soaring vocals are charismatic of this album and it features the track Optimystical which Andres previously sampled. This reissue - the first of any kind - proves why.
Offering a mixture of samba-soaked Latin jazz rhythms, sweet vocals, spacey analogue synthesizer sounds, Azymuth style electric piano motifs, MPB style songwriting and Brazilian jazz-funk stylistic tropes, it's a joyously sunny and quirkily off-kilter affair that impresses from start to finish. Production wise it's a little loose and fuzzy round the edges, but that only adds to the album's obvious allure. Jazz Is Dead LP. Jazz Is Dead. The results are detailed on "Jazz Is Dead", a superb album that combines elements of dusty soundtrack jazz, soul, jazz-funk, Latin jazz and head-nodding live beats influenced by the duo's hip-hop roots.
Highlights include the atmospheric, slow-motion warmth of Roy Ayers collaboration "Hey Lover", the floor-rocking fusion heaviness of epic Azymuth hook-up "Apocaliptico", the languid sweetness of 'Down Deep" featuring Doug Carn and the samba-soaked sunshine that is Marcos Valle composition "Nao Saia Da Praca".

With a jazzy bassline, wild keys, swooning horns and brushed drums, it's another fine example of why Hungary and funk are the very best of bedfellows.
TR1 10 Sep 12 Funk. RDM Band. Proudly and masterfully, as always, the mighty Tramp imprint have gone and found the band's recordings from , spear-headed by Milton Campbell's iconic voice. Both "Give Up" and "How Can I Get In Touch With You" are utterly timeless examples of what American soul has to teach the world even 40 years after its inception, and you might wanna act fast given just how in-demand the original version of this 7" has become!
TR 10 Nov 17 Funk. Clarence Reid. I Get My Kicks. TR 25 May 15 Funk. When The Well Runs Dry. This rare-as-hens-teeth reissue of Reunion's impossibly hard-to-find boogie monster "When The Well Runs Dry" is like gold dust being sprinkled all over our charts, seeing as this goes for BIG bucks up on Discogs, and this alternative mix is sounding even badder than the original one we're used to - that early boogie magic shines through with every new strum of that funky guitar.
Even the flip, "A Brighter Day", is nothing but good vibes, and signs off an EP which will undoubtedly leave our shelves just as fast as it came in.
