Even so, and despite her consistently over-cautious phrasing, the vocals are attractively languid and husky, inflected with a dead-pan world-weariness that Marlene Dietrich would have recognized. As it is in the same key and uses the same orchestral forces as the Festmarsch it is played here as an effective prelude to the jaunty march. In der vorliegenden Aufnahme wird die 7. In this Mercury LP we have luxurious, full-orchestral sound and well-sprung rhythms, captured with the usual aplomb by the company's engineers.
I've included an. Janos Starker was the cellist of this ensemble. I know of no other recordings of his performance with a string quartet. He was also at the time of this recording, the principal cellist with the Chicago Symphony Orchesta, under his mentor Fritz Reiner. The dark, richly textured orchestration of Franck's only symphony a piece that has yet to achieve the popularity it deserves sets this work apart from other nineteenth century symphonies, and provides a unique audio experience.
From its opening bars, reminiscent of Liszt's Les Preludes, the D Minor Symphony soon morphs into one of the most brooding pieces from the nineteenth century symphonic repertory, a sort of French Isle of the Dead.
In its day, late in the century, it was stupidly vilified by archconservatives for its three-movement construction and the composer's inclusion of the English horn little more than an alto oboe , as if Franck had chosen the kazoo. The Monteux has the advantage for most audiophiles of a superb stereo recording. But it wasn't ; Paray really was taking the first movement like that. It is astonishingly swift, and very few conductors have abided by the composer's instructions in this respect.
But it makes for a quite different reading - and once you've climbed over the metaphorical stile that is this sudden increase in tempo, and stroll into Paray's pastoral world, you may well find it's one which agrees with you.
Certainly there's much to like here in both recordings - Paray had molded the Detroit Symphony into a world class orchestra, and Mercury's Living Presence sound recordings were the perfect way to capture them in the early years of the LP era.

The pw is: billinrio I very infrequently use a pw here, but when I do, that's it. The Civil War. The first priority was to identify the Confederate band that Fremantle heard on the second day of the Battle of Gettysburg.
For months, he searched through history books, periodicals, Civil War studies, and regimental records of the Confederacy. He struck pure gold when he found a re-print of a speech given by member of the 26th North Carolina Regiment Band. There was no doubt that this was the band referred to in Fremantle's diary. Finding musical parts for the 26th North Carolina, however, was a big challenge to Fennell.
Not surprisingly, there were no printed scores. Fennell observed in his profuse notes for the Mercury album that it wasn't until the next century that bandmasters were supplied with "more than a sometimes-cued one-line cornet part". The original Confederate band parts of the 26th were in varied condition. One had a hole through it, probably caused by a Minie ball during a battle.
Others were faded so badly that Fennell had to decipher where the staves and the bar lines were. And the many different musicians who copied music into the individual band parts made lots of mistakes. After struggling with the often illegible parts, Fennell finally arrived at a point where he could test what he'd transcribed.
He invited six Eastman Wind Ensemble players to his studio to read through the 40 tunes he had written out. Errors were fixed as they turned up. Fennell prepared his final band scores from the tapes he recorded at this session. The musicians of the 26th performed a dual function, Fennell learned, which may account for the amateur-looking parts he found: "They played when it was appropriate for them to do so, cheering the troops in camp or on the march.
They served under the surgeon and their military duties were confined to that of field hospital corpsmen. Armed with these historic manuscripts, Fennell got to work ferreting out the authentic brass instruments played by Civil War bands.
He found most of them in private museums and instrument collections. These horns were designed so that their bells were pointed back to deliver their sounds to the troops marching behind them.
This recording offers a foretaste of performances of Schubert on original instruments; the conductor's light touch and breezy tempos, and the orchestra's wiry strings aren't far from what Norrington, Harnoncourt, and others have recorded in recent years. Skrowaczewski finds no titanic climaxes or olympian raptures in this "Great," whose total timing is just over forty-five minutes.
The second movement, marked Andante con moto, is positively perky here. The MSO's strings are taxed by the seemingly endless triplets in the Finale, but, all in all, this is a well-played, lightweight performance, albeit one which lacks the marmoreal qualities that other conductors and orchestras have brought to it. The "Little" C Major was recorded three years earlier.
This delightful work dances between hints of Haydn and bites of Beethoven but is Schubertian to the core. Schmidt-Isserstedt, an underrated conductor, finds the right tone for each of the movements, except possibly for the Finale, a notoriously difficult movement to find the right tempos for.
The London Symphony is on its toes for this recording, and the engineering for both recordings is among Mercury's best. Brahms - Piano Concerto No. Liszt - Hungrarian Rhapsody No. Beethoven - Piano Sonata Op. London Symphony Orchestra, Stanislaw Skrowaczewski. The text of the ballet was written by Piston and Wiener.
It describes a marketplace teeming with activity and enlivened by a circus. A flutist acts as a snake charmer, and also charms women. A rich widow flirts with a merchant, is discovered by her lover, faints, and is revived by the flutist's music. The circus then leaves the square. Piston arranged music from the ballet into a suite for orchestra; this was premiered on November 22, , by the Pittsburgh Symphony under Fritz Reiner. It had eight numbers and was for small orchestra.
Five years later Sessions revised the music as a four-movement suite for a large symphony orchestra. In it the human spirit personified by Duke Lorenzo comes under attack from sinister, powerful forces from the unknown. To set the mood of the piece, Sessions quotes a passage written by Andreyev in his My Diary, a few months before completion of the play. In it Andreyev depicts a castle the soul into which the host admits a succession of grotesque masked figures.
The first movement is a wild melody with cries of despair answered by "malicious laughter," as the composer stated. The second movement is for Scene 3 of the play, where the festive gathering is gradually infiltrated by increasing numbers of the Black Maskers.
A quite central section is Duke Lorenzo's song, but at the end the Maskers trumpet in triumph. The third movement is the introduction to Scene 4 of the play, with reminiscences of the Maskers' trumpet calls, and then new trumpet calls representing Lorenzo's death. In the final movement, his castle is overwhelmed by flames, in whose purity Lorenzo finds redemption.
With a libretto by R. The scenario, concerning witchcraft and sexual obsession in seventeenth century New England, offered unlimited scope to the composer's full-bodied orchestration and lush harmonic manner. Despite initial sucess, however, the opera was not revived until and seldom thereafter. Hanson compiled the five-movement suite in and recorded it in The Overture begins with a brass chorale, which sounds forbodingly over tolling timpani and gongs, gaining in passion as the music emerges into focus.
A heightened turn to the major, replete with pealing bells, indicates the powerfully emotive nature of the story about to unfold. Children's Dance is a witty and rhythmically agile scherzo, bounding forward with uninhibited zest. Ironically, it depicts the presence in the town of pleasure-seeking cavaliers. Love Duet is warm and lilting, the melodic material intensifying by degree, before it reaches a purposeful climax over a measured timpani tread, and closes in a suddenly ominous mood, reflecting the doomed desire of Pastor Bradford for Lady Marigold Sandys.
The Prelude to Act II opens pastorally, becoming rhythmically animated as the music moves forward impulsively into the Maypole Dances. This vividly descriptive sequence, complete with modal inflections and offbeat percussion touches, heads relentlessly to its whirlwind conclusion; a graphic image for the conflict between hedonism and puritanism which underlies the opera's fateful conclusion. Alan Hovhaness: Prelude and Quadruple Fugue.
The Prelude features a somber modal melody that is elaborated with great sensuality. The Fugue is something of a compositional tour de force: it presents four subjects, each of which appears in full exposition, before all are combined in quadruple invertible counterpoint i. Hovhaness has asserted that he is the first composer ever to have accomplished this feat, although Mozart inserted a brief fugato with quadruple invertible counterpoint into the coda of the fourth movement of his Symphony No.
Bach had intended to conclude The Art of Fugue with a full quadruple fugue, but did not live to complete the work. Stephen Sondheim 6. Could I Leave You? It's a rare example of an opera singer crossing over to more "popular" fare in this case, to the American equivalent of operetta and sounding very natural in doing so.

One of the finest ever recordings of the Pathetique The Finale is masterly The Romeo and Juliet, Fantasy-Overture is just great. What a disc! True, some of the sequences in the early part now sound manufactured; the caprices of the "Helpmate" become rather tiresome ; the battle with the dice heavily loaded goes on too long.
But Strauss's sheer exuberance, his delight in wielding his mastery of the most complex counterpoint, the melting tenderness in those moments when he was content to be simple and quiet, give this tone-poem many unforgettable passages. There is already a fine recording available by Clemens Krauss and the Vienna Philharmonic, well if not faultlessly engineered, on the Decca list.
This new version is a worthy rival to it. Dorati, who is thought of in this country mainly as a ballet specialist, reveals that he is equally at home in vast concert scores such as this, and with the aid of his excellent Minneapolis Orchestra which he took over in gives a reading which is full of vitality, shapely and admirably clear.
Though the strenuous parts leave little to be desired, it is the reflective sections which are given a particular beauty—the composer's musings on his previous works, or his peaceful reveries the cor anglais theme after figure 99 in the score.
The strings of the orchestra are first class, and the solo violin not only well illustrates the changeable temperament of Frau Pauline but does so with purer intonation than his Vienna Phil. The trumpets heralding the battle, by the way, are played off-stage as the composer demanded—a detail which Decca passed over. What of the recording? Mercury have a high reputation to uphold, and they are clearly proud of their " Living Presence" quality—though I don;t understand how their use of a single microphone constitutes a "unique recording technique ".
The tone of the orchestra emerges faithfully though without quite the roundness and weight of the Decca version , the disc surface is completely quiet, and the recording takes the full blaze of the shattering climaxes e. Review from Gramophone November In spite of his first-class music-making, he was the target of Chicago Tribune critic Claudia Cassidy whose unjustified displeasure with Kubelik was obvious from every scathing review.
It was an impossible situation for anyone taking over leadership of the CSO after the stormy departure of Artur Rodzinski, who always enjoyed and rightfully so the vitriolic critic's glowing praise. These are superb performances recorded in towards the end of the Czech conductor's first season with the CSO. Mercury had just started its remarkable series of CSO recordings that began with Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition , a disk that amazed audiophiles due to its balance, dynamic range and rich orchestral textures—in addition to the splendid performance.
Pictures , inexplicably, is not currently available but a few of the early Kubelik's are: Dvorak's New World coupled with Mozart's Symphony No.
All were recorded with Mercury's single microphone process. A concept album , the album is a fictional account of Chicago's Paradise Theatre from its opening to closing and eventual abandonment , used as a metaphor for America's changing times from the late s into the s.
Dennis DeYoung , who envisioned and developed the entire concept, confirmed this in an episode of In the Studio with Redbeard about the making of the album. Initial vinyl copies of the album have a design featuring the name of the band laser etched directly onto the vinyl on side 2 some copies had a wax design of the cover art. The vinyl record sleeve was a gate-fold and was painted by the artist Chris Hopkins. On the back cover, label and spine, the title of the record is spelled "Paradise Theater", while on the front cover, the title is spelled "Paradise Theatre".
Album - Billboard United States. Amazingly, however, their popularity continued unabated. On Paradise Theater , their 10th album, Dennis took the creative reins, allowing them to design an impressive stage show around his concept. Musically, however, it was clear that they were never going to return to the same style of progressive pomp rock that had propelled them to success in the first place.
It is no wonder that when the band reunited after over a decade of bad blood, all the music released post was left on the cutting room floor -- further proof that Paradise Theater was truly the best of times. There are plenty of themes Styx hit on here, such as cocaine abuse Snowblind , estranged relationships Half-Penny, Two-Penny , and urban despair Lonely People.
The centerpiece here though has to be The Best of Times and its look at the distant barren-ness of today's world, but despite the bleakness of the song there does seem to be quite a bit of forward-thinking hope about it. This has to be the best song Dennis DeYoung ever wrote.
Pete Mineau: When I was a freshman in high school back in , I was sitting in art class one day when an older girl named Janelle, who was a Junior, walked in with an album under her arm. Being in ninth grade, I was still only in Art I. Anyway, Janelle put on the the album and we all started to listen. I was immediately drawn to the band on the turntable! Great rocking guitars, prominent keyboards, and the vocals varied from song to song with very unique sounding vocals and excellent harmonies.
I had to find out more about them. I slowly made my way over to where Janelle was sitting and said something like,"cool music She looked up at me, handed me the album cover and said, "They're called Styx; this is their latest album. I studied the cover and said, "Cool! I've never heard of them before Janelle replied, "They're from the Chicago area. I think their last album was better than this one. I'll bring it in tomorrow you can see what you think. Well, she did and I fell in love with "Styx II"!
I went out and bought it on 8-track tape and began hyping this new band that I "discovered" to my buddies! Man Of Miracles came and went the following year without me even being aware of it. Then one day I stopped over to my buddy Randy's house and went downstairs to the basement where we hung out to find him listening to Equinox.
We both suddenly had a new favourite album! To this day, Equinox is still my favourite and gets my vote for "Best Styx Album"! Later that year, Styx was playing at the field house of the local university. We were quick to get our tickets! This was the days of general seating, so I made my way to the front of the stage where the keyboards were located and leaned against the barricade.
I was blown away by the show! They played a lot of stuff from Equinox which made my day! Styx's next album, Crystal Ball , came out in late as we were just starting our Senior year in high school.
My buddy Randy bought it but I wasn't all that impressed with it. I was still playing Equinox in heavy rotation! In early , it was announced that Styx were going to play the college again. Just as before, we got our tickets and on the day of the show, I headed to the front and positioned myself in front of the keyboard stacks!
As they started to play I couldn't help staring to the right at this young looking guitar player wearing a white jumpsuit with shoulder-length platinum blonde hair and bangs. I became obsessed for the whole show trying to figure out, "is that a guy or a chick? I remember thinking, "If that's a chick Features Interviews Lists.

The following tracks have nothing more to present, following the same tempo and style of music without any pleasant surprises that could take this record to a higher level. Overall, the middle part of the album is quite uninspiring and uninteresting The best of times. The best tracks appear near the end of the album with 'Snowblind' and 'Half-penny, two-penny', a decent rocking track.
The following two outros are just a pleasant ending for a generally weak record. I admit there is not much to say about this record, and not much motivation to speak further about a mediocre output.
It may be decent for collectors of this music genre and could probably be worth of 2. But definitely not good enough Obviously not recommended for first-time Styx listeners, this album can be misleading, as it was for me I think that Paradise Theater is the more worthy or should I say less unworthy? In a way, Paradise Theater can be seen as the best aspects of those two previous albums combined into one.
While Pieces Of Eight went too far towards straightforward Arena rock and Cornerstone went too far towards syrupy ballads, Paradise Theater strikes a decent balance between the two directions, creating the most coherent and varied Styx album since The Grand Illusion from four years earlier.
The fact that the album is a concept album further contributes to the album's appeal. Having that said, however, I must immediately add that Paradise Theater is by no means a great album and it is not particularly progressive at all over and above the fact that it is a concept album.
The two short A. It is not easy to pick out favourite tracks from Paradise Theater, but the aforementioned are strong candidates. None of the songs here are as strong as some individual tracks from the previous albums like Boat On The River or Renegade, but the album as a whole is stronger.
There is no pretending that this is a Prog album by any means, but it is a good concept album that reminds me a bit of ELO's Time that was released the same year incidentally also the year I was born.
The worst song is lonely people, the only song here that I don't like at all. One thing that might put people off is the inclusion of brass instruments creating a sometimes more slick approach.
But despite this, Paradise Theater is darker and less celebratory compared to earlier albums and Hard Rock is not left behind. I somehow find this album a more mature effort. Overall, I think that Paradise Theater is one of Styx' most consistent albums and I find it quite enjoyable. However, I would not say that this is the best place to start if you want to explore Styx' discography. The name of album and cover looked a bit strange from very beginning, but I waited for the first sounds.
Yes, you right, I was shocked!!! In fact, album's music is really what you wait from album with that name and under that cover. Choral vocals with pop-synth arrangements, plenty of electronic kitsch space "robotic" effects. All the bad low key pop music prepared for year is used there.
Styx always played with AOR and pop rock, sometimes with rare prog moments. But in that album they made things outside of that circle. Worst possible pop-synth-rock without even small pieces acceptable for listening.
Starting from that album, I just forget that name and never listen any other their album during next 26 years. Just avoid at any circumstances. I realize this isn't the last Styx album, but like Drama, Final Cut, and Presence, it is one of those titles which represent the conclusion of a band's most worthwhile era.
Loosely conceptual, it laments the decay of the United States and its economy using the Theater as metaphor. Whether he intended or not, I believe the metaphor also applies well to our collective collapse of values, and even in this case, of coming band stagnation. As Howard Bloom once mentioned about DeYoung's thematic visions, there is an aura of warning and collapsing civilization running below the often optimistic sounding music of the band, the clues can be noted throughout certain lyrics and album art.
Styx itself was not immune. While the band's three writers continued to watch their artistic marriage fall apart, DeYoung somehow managed to spin the magic one more time.View credits, reviews, tracks and shop for the Gatefold Sleeve Vinyl release of Paradise Theatre on Discogs/5(12).

One night in the fall of my junior year, I made a Twitter thread about my favorite beauty hacks and tips. I had hundreds of direct messages from girls asking me about which products they could make at home. That's when I realized that my love of makeup wasn't just a hobby — I could turn it into a business. We closed our Los Angeles retail location until further notice, for example. But we have successfully been able to pivot. My experience turning my side hustle into a fully fledged brand has helped me steer my company during this moment of uncertainty.
If you're looking to start a business right now, here are some of the lessons I have learned that still help me today. From the start, I knew that I wanted to create high-quality products at an accessible price point, since my customer base at the time was made up of mostly college students.
We still sell them today. In the very beginning, I worked with what I had. I taught myself how to create Facebook ads and Google shopping ads to start to reach new customers, and made a concerted effort not to go outside my budget. I watched my personal spending carefully and cut back on things like girls' trips and lunches out with my friends.By my side In the dark of night By my side I wish you were I wish you were In the dark of night These faces they haunt me And I wish you were so close to me Yes I wish you were By my side Submit Corrections. As the two men talked, Glass mentioned the need for a novelty song for Como. Manning replied that he had just done a demo recording like that which had yet to be heard by anyone. They arranged to meet the next day; the result of the chance meeting was Como's "Hot Diggity".
They have all kind of Top 40s. How they grabbed onto this is a little beyond me. When Como said he didn't speak the language, David Franko, the head of RCA International, provided personal language lessons to get the recording made.

It is made with all natural ingredients but it has only two active homeopathic ingredients, which may not be so effective. It does have a money back guarantee, however, it is only good for 7 days, which we felt was way too short. During our research, we found limited clinical evidence for homeopathic medicine in the treatment of jet lag, which definitely affected how we rated this product.
We felt that this was a good product, but definetly could be better. The price was the most expensive we found for a homeopathic product. This was disappointing given the fact that it only contains two key homeopathic ingredients. We felt that this was far too short and indicative of the manufacturer's confidence in their product. This raised red flags for us. We were unable to find many positive reviews for this product which left us wondering how effective it really is, which was a shame.
This product could be better, simply put. We felt that the homeopathic ingredients it included were good but it wasn't enough. We felt that their 7 day guarantee and return policy needs updating and we would like to have seen some more positive reviews to better understand how effective this product really is. Overall, we felt that it would need to introduce some more effective key ingredients that have been clinically proven to get a higher grade.
Together with its lack of money back guarantee, we had no choice other than to place this at the bottom of our list. Sign Up Doctor Login Search. Top 5 Jet Lag Products. Subscribe Now! The music works well within the film but it's even more enjoyable on its own. Previously available only as a German Import from Varese Sarabande, this new expanded version includes some 14 minutes of previously unreleased music as well as a 6-minute radio interview with Jamie Lee Curtis, which would have been better as a DVD supplement than as an extra on a CD.

The result was about 25 hours of recorded experimentation that produced Original Soundtracks 1. At this time, the US charts were dominated by movie soundtrack albums and singles. Once Eno pointed out that it would not be a real ploy for radio airplay, but a spoof of one, U2 agreed to the concept. U2 had frequently improvised in the past, and in the Original Soundtracks 1 sessions they engaged in free-form jamming to video clips from various films.
You have to be careful not to disturb the organic flow of the thing. Part of the group's intent in creating Original Soundtracks 1 had been to make a "night-time" record. Every record has a location, a place where you enjoy listening to it, whether that be a bedroom or a club, well this record location is a fast train. It's slo-mo music though.
But it has an odd sense of speed in the background. With this in mind the band had tried to create "visual music" when recording, continuing a trend that began with their song " Zooropa ". The genesis, recording and subsequent release of the album is detailed in Eno's diaries A Year with Swollen Appendices. About half of the album is instrumental, and the vocal tracks generally stray from the clear hooks and melodies that usually define U2's work.
Of these, the delicate " Miss Sarajevo ", featuring Italian tenor Luciano Pavarotti on vocals, is considered the most memorable.
Brian Eno alluded to some extra tracks that were recorded with the Japanese singer Holi at the time and that they may be released at some point in the future: " Some of the other pieces are really lovely too, and I'm sure will see the light of day.
