This custom is prompted by their belief that if you walk a clean street you will not carry dirt and impurities into the home. The same idea can be applied to the mind.
Continuous scrubbing of our thoughts and cleansing of our minds can help keep our actions clean and pure. Just so every thought is shaping our character and, consequently, shaping our destiny and our lives. Read Proverbs from the chalkboard. We have the power within ourselves to control our thoughts.
We can choose not to let bad thoughts stay in our minds. Our minds have the ability to absorb wisdom and knowledge as readily as they absorb things that are evil and negative. Packer explained what we can do to control our thoughts:. There is always some act being performed on that stage. These delinquent thoughts will try to upstage everybody. You will be left, because you consented to it, to the influence of unrighteous thoughts.
They may be vulgar, immoral, or even depraved. If you can learn to master them, you will have a happy life. Choose from among the sacred music of the Church a favorite hymn. Memorize it. Even though you have had no musical training, you can think through a hymn. Make it your emergency channel. Whenever you find that these shady actors have slipped from the sidelines of your thinking onto the stage of your mind, put on this record [of a hymn].
The hymn will change the whole mood on the stage of your mind. Because it is uplifting and clean, the baser thoughts will disappear. In a scene from the musical The Sound of Music, Maria, a governess, comforts the children in her charge during a thunderstorm by helping them think of their favorite things. By creating pleasant thoughts, the children forget their fears. Pleasant thoughts push out unpleasant ones.
We should treat our minds like a storehouse of good things, and we will find no room for anything else. Look for good thoughts in the scriptures. And in more recent years archaeologists began to uncover the city, and they found houses just as the owners had left them. The house with the bad pictures was discovered, and today, those who tour Pompeii find that the guide keeps the door to that room locked so that people will not walk in accidentally, and become embarrassed.
His thoughts came out into the open. Pride, for example, is a sin of the mind. And so is lust and suspicion and discouragement. These are all sins of the mind. Because all of us contend with the old nature even after we are saved by faith in Jesus Christ , all of us have trouble with undesirable thoughts popping into our heads.
These thoughts can be surprising, sometimes confusing, and sometimes even condemning. Most of us would not want the thoughts that have gone through our minds during the past month to be flashed on a screen in front of a room for all to see. It could be kind of embarrassing, and perhaps even frightening. The secret thoughts, however, that pop into our heads are not really an accurate barometer of our spiritual condition. It is what a person continues to think about, and what he delights in —that tells more accurately what he is and where he stands spiritually.
While we cannot ever completely get rid of the sin-nature here in this life, we can keep it in relative control. The mind is like a garden which can grow beauty or it can grow ugliness. It can produce flowers or it can bring forth weeds. It must be tended with care and with diligence. It must be disciplined by conscious exercise. The mind must be exercised like the body—thinking on good and wholesome things.
The list is recorded in Philippians We must never let our minds dwell on every piece of gossip we hear, because it may not be factual true. We must be willing to hear the other side of a story, and not hear only the one side.
In case of an evil thought that is merely a fight from the devil, your heart will revolt against this thought and you will try with all your determination to drive it away and get rid of it and not accept it at all.
But in case of falling by thought a man will be contented with the wicked thought or will be enjoying it; he may even try to keep harboring this thought for a long time, and he may be annoyed if something occurs to break it up. When these thoughts come to your mind, do you sincerely oppose them, or do you become satisfied with them? Here is the measure and here is the test of the substance of your purity. My advice to you is to oppose wicked thoughts and escape from them. If an evil thought attacks you, try to occupy your mind with something else or run away from it.
You may think of something else that is deeper so as to divert the course of your thinking. You may occupy yourself with the reading of something interesting so that your thoughts may be diverted from that wicked question to the topic of reading. You may pray in secret and raise your heart to God to keep away the evil thought from you; and if all these methods are not effective you may occupy yourself with some manual work or talk with anybody to drive away the thought.
Be cautious not to yield to the wicked thought as this is treachery on your part against God and association with enemies. Your escape from the thought as soon as it comes to your mind is much easier than your attempt to run away from it, after you have kept it for a certain period of time, because as long as the thought continues in your mind, it will exercise its mastery over you, and will subject your will to its attraction, until you become a slave to it and fulfill its desire.
If the thought continues with you, it may be changed into an emotion or a desire or a lust; it may develop into an attempt at fulfillment, and thus you may be degraded from a sin by thought to sin by act.In The Purest Form.
