I Am Mariah Mariah Carey claims Rainbow , her first album since divorcing Tommy Mottola , "chronicles my emotional roller coaster ride of the past year," but less subjective listeners could be forgiven for viewing it as simply another Mariah Carey album.
After all, all the elements are in place -- the crossover dance hits, the ballads, the cameos, the hip producers, the weird cover choice from the early '80s. But dig a little deeper, and her words ring true. Rainbow is the first Carey album where she's written personal lyrics, and allusions to her separation from Mottola are evident throughout the album, even if it doesn't really amount to the "story" she mentions in the liner notes. As appropriate for any introspective album, it's a bit ballad-heavy, which makes Rainbow seem a little samey.
That repetition isn't necessarily a problem, since she does formula very well, managing to appeal to both housewives as well as b-boys. Rainbow proves that she can still pull off that difficult balancing act, but it's hard not to be a little disappointed that she'd didn't shake the music up a little bit more -- after all, it would have been a more effective album if the heartbreak, sorrow, and joy that bubbles underneath the music were brought to the surface.

The song's outro notably features Carey's signature use of her whistle register. The Gunna -assisted "Stay Long Love You" weaves "retro influences into a modern sound palette" containing heavy trap inflections, with Carey expressing desire through "a slightly quicker tempo and party vibe".
To promote the album, Carey embarked on the Caution World Tour. The tour was met with rave reviews from music critics, many of whom praised Carey's vocal performances, as well as her overall stage presence. The song reached the top 10 in Hungary and became Carey's 23rd top 10 hit on the US Adult Contemporary chart, peaking at number seven. Caution was met with critical acclaim. At Metacritic , which assigns a normalized rating out of to reviews from mainstream publications, Caution received an average score of 82, based on nine reviews, indicating "universal acclaim".
Reviewing the album for AllMusic , Andy Kellman wrote that Carey's [themes of] "flirtatious enticement, celebration, reminiscence, perseverance, rejection" were "highly energized". The album also appeared on several year-end lists. Caution opened at number five on the US Billboard with 51, album-equivalent units , which included 43, pure album sales, becoming Carey's eighteenth top-ten album in the United States.
Though it was her first number-one album in Taiwan, Caution was met with moderate success elsewhere, peaking inside the top 20 in Australia, Canada and Spain; the top 30 in Japan, Portugal and Greece; and the top 40 in the UK, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Italy, Belgium and New Zealand. All songs were written and produced by Carey, other musicians working on the tracks are noted below. Credits adapted from Tidal. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Mariah Carey.
