The band promoted the album on a large Yugoslav tour, with 59 concerts. The beginning of the tour featured two concerts in Belgrade's Pionir Hall , with about 5, spectators per concert. The first concert was marked by an incident: the Hall's manager refused to turn of the lights in the Hall, fearing that the audience could "demolish the parquetry".
The efforts of the band, the Hall's management and the police to reach an agreement lasted for about an hour, and there was a danger from the angry audience's reactions, but, eventually, the management was persuaded to turn the lights off. At the end of June, they headlined a concert in Zagreb, which was organized by the newspaper Vjesnik and featured the most popular Yugoslav bands at the time.
During the tour, the band performed in Belgrade once again, on Kalemegdan. The concert featured guest appearance by Gillan bass guitarist John McCoy , who would produce the band's following album, on the cover of ZZ Top song " Tush ". The concert featured about 10, spectators, and was, despite the fact that some of them got injured, praised by the press.
During the first week after its release, the album was sold in more than , copies, becoming the fastest-selling Yugoslav album, with the final number of copies sold being bigger than , Mrtva priroda confirmed the band's status as the most popular Yugoslav band. For the band's concert in Zagreb Ice Hall, held on February 8, an initial number of 10, tickets was sold out, and the organizers decided to put an additional number of 4, tickets to sale, thus making the hall overcrowded.
On the rest of the tour, the organizers reduced the number of tickets, and some of the concerts were cancelled, as the organizers feared of new problems. The scandal saw large covering in the media, which had the effect on the concerts. The band had to cut short their concert in Celje , because the firemen appointed as security were aggressive towards the audience. The concert in Tuzla was canceled because, as the organizers stated, "order can not be guaranteed on a concert of a group actions of which are not in accordance with socialist morale".
The concerts were held a month later than initially planned, as organizers hesitated due to Zagreb tragedy, fearing they might not be able to provide adequate security. The first of the concerts was not well visited, but the following three were, with a final number of tickets sold for the concerts being about 20, On the Youth Day , the band was unexpectedly awarded with May Award by the Belgrade Committee of the League of Socialist Youth , with an explanation that the band "sings about the life and the problems of young people" and that "it has become a symbol of the large part of the youth".
U ime naroda was released in July, selling , copies and becoming the best selling Yugoslav live album until then. The band's following album, Buvlja pijaca Flea Market , was released at the end of The producer was once again John McCoy, and the album was mixed in London.
However, the final number of copies sold was ,, which was less than expected by the band and the record company. The band started a tour two weeks after the album release. However, the audience was less interested in their concerts than on the previous tours. The tour was ended with a concert in Belgrade Fair — Hall 1 , which was the first concert in the hall after Belgrade Gitarijada festival.
The concert was extensively promoted. The concert was entitled Hleba i igara Bread and Games , and featured the biggest stage on a Yugoslav rock concert up to that point. The concert featured about 8, spectators. The band held four concerts, the first one, in Plovdiv , attended only by young socialist activists with special invitations, forced by security to remain on their seats throughout the whole concert.
On the closing ceremony, the band performed after Greek folk dancers , Bulgarian rhythm dancers and Romanian youth theatre, which performed the play Specter of Capitalism Attacks the Youth of the East. The studio side also finds them at something of a peak. Boasting a song apiece from each member, it opens with the majestic classic "Badge," co-written by Eric Clapton and George Harrison and ranking among both of their best work. It's followed by Jack Bruce 's "Doing That Scrapyard Thing," an overstuffed near-masterpiece filled with wonderful, imaginative eccentricities, and finally, there's Ginger Baker 's tense, dramatic "What a Bringdown," easily the best original he contributed to the group.
Like all of Cream 's albums outside Disraeli Gears , Goodbye is an album of moments, not a tight cohesive work, but those moments are all quite strong on their own terms, making this a good and appropriate final bow.
Categories : Cream band live albums live albums Polydor Records live albums. Politician is the best of the live tracks. I've always liked the song's "neo-blues" feel and the band does an excellent job expanding on the studio version. Clapton is on top of his game, but once again it seems as if he and Jack Bruce aren't quite on the same page. It suffers from the same shortcomings as the other live tracks. I much prefer the studio version to this rendition.
The studio tracks save this album. The final three tracks are among the best songs Cream created in its short existence. Cream is often faulted for weak songwriting, despite their impressive musical talents. Eric Clapton collaborated with George Harrison to write the song Badge , and what better way is there to improve songwriting than to enlist the help of a Beatle except maybe getting two Beatles!
Badge is easily one of Cream's best songs. It has fantastic flow, starting off very lightly and working its way up. Harrison is very tasteful with his rhythm guitar and Clapton provides an excellent solo. I also love the lyrics, which apparently originated as drunken conversations Harrison had with Ringo Starr.
I would have much rather seen this song last nine minutes instead of the live cuts! Doing that Scrapyard Thing is also a very strong song. The piano that opens the song sounds like it would be at home on a Beatles album. Just before Cream's third album, Wheels of Fire , was to be released, the group's manager Robert Stigwood announced that the group were going to disband after a farewell tour and a final concert at the Royal Albert Hall in November. The original plan for Goodbye was to make it a double album, with one disc featuring studio recordings and the other with live performances much like Wheels of Fire , but with a lack of quality material on hand the album was only one disc with three live recordings and three studio recordings.
The original LP release of the album was packaged in a gatefold sleeve with art direction handled by Haig Adishian. The outer sleeve featured photography by Roger Phillips with a cover design by the Alan Aldridge ink Studios , while the inner sleeve featured an illustration of a cemetery by Roger Hane that had the song titles on tombstones. In a contemporary review for Rolling Stone , music critic Ray Rezos felt Cream deserved to depart with a better album.
He wrote that most of the live songs sound inferior to the original recordings and that the studio tracks are marred by the same flaw as on Wheels of Fire , namely the presence of blues playing on songs whose compositions were not blues in his opinion. In a retrospective review for AllMusic , senior editor Stephen Thomas Erlewine called Goodbye a work of "hard, heavy rock" and "strong moments" rather than cohesiveness, with live music that is generally better than on Wheels of Fire and a side of studio recordings that also found Cream "at something of a peak".
Considine was less impressed in The Rolling Stone Album Guide , deeming Goodbye an incomplete record with "exquisite studio work" but mediocre live performances. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Hard rock. Polydor Records. Archived from the original on 3 April Retrieved 15 September Archived from the original on 16 May It may be just me, but they appear to have similar cover art and Dead Can Dance - Into The Labyrinth does have a catalog number with And then the rumor mill began circulation, with whispers that yes there would be a final album, and again that it would be produced by Felix Pappalardi, and not only that, but that the album would be also be a double album, released in much the same manner as Wheels Of Fire, featuring one record of studio material and one of live dates.
Though Goodbye Cream was distributed as a gatefold, in reality, it was only a single album that did reach number 2 in the United States. But that slotting may have been a bit circumspect at the end of the psychedelic decade, meaning that that album may have sold so well simply because it was their final album, and no one wanted to miss a thing. I remember that the album quickly fell from favor, with many suggesting that Cream and the guitar god Eric Clapton should have gone out with stronger material, fresh material, and given their fans a truly farewell bash they would remember for all time.
Everyone agreed that the sound was inferior, an aspect that would [sort of] be cleaned up on the compact disc, others cited the bluesy nature of the songs, with the flaw being that these blues songs where not actually blues material in their essence and nature. Even Rolling Stone did a second review for Goodbye Cream in , and refused to give it a rating, saying: Goodbye is not a very worthwhile album. Critics will probably tear it apart, while even bonafide Cream freaks will have to be a little disappointed.
It's like the once-famous tycoon who dies an anonymous pauper; it's just a bad way to go out. What melody the song had is lost as Jack and Eric get involved in a shouting match.
Eric comes in with a flash of guitar at the end; it all fits together tightly. As for the studio cuts, they are plagued with the same fault which hindered Wheels Of Fire, Cream was best at playing blues; however, none of the stuff they wrote was blues.Goodbye, an Album by Cream.
