Issued as a fabulous mock vinyl style black disc , presented in i ndividually numbered card picture sleeve complete with the die-cut inner. Quick to monopolise on his regained status, Elvis headed into the studio just one month after the NBC Special aired.
Keen to put the soundtracks behind him and record something with more substance, he opted to head back to Memphis for the first time since his days at Sun Records. Backed by a stellar cast of session musicians, he injected some much-needed soul back into his recorded output.
Impassioned and again drawing from his gospel roots, a reported case of mild laryngitis adds a sense of deep maturity to the vocals.
Artistically, it is ranked as one of his all-time greats and certainly was the best of his later recordings. With his back well and truly turned on Hollywood, Elvis immersed himself in live performance, donned a jumpsuit and headed to Las Vegas. In early , he held a month-long residency at the International Hotel, from which this collection is drawn.
Although several live collections were recorded and released during the 70s, here he is still running off the success of his comeback, aided by an excellent backing band. While this is distinctive Elvis, there is a shift in his repertoire, with many famous and contemporary pop standards creeping into the performance including the Beatles' Let it Be and Neil Diamond's Sweet Caroline. Opening with Blue Suede Shoes, the album starts with a power house performance that was to characterise not only most of all the albums that followed, but also Elvis's concerts.
Like the concerts the listener is taken on a musical journey, with the pace changing, fluctuating between heartfelt ballads like "I Love You Because", "Blue Moon" and the country blues rockers. The humble, white, country boy began to break down those racial barriers without the need to make any political statement.
The true value of this music is that it will still be listened to in another 60 years time. In the beginning, music was made by the talented and the talented made music that endured. This vinyl has poor quality audio that sounds flat with no depth and does not sound like a usual recording.
It is also quiet, all the tracks are present with no distortion but the music just sounds off. Next purchase, I will not take the chance on one of these smaller record labels Waxtime not worth the saving if audio quality not right.
Why don't Amazon stock original labels such as Sony or RCA instead of these cheap imitations that sound more like bootlegs? Will have to return item. One person found this helpful. This review is for the vinyl release which differs in many ways to the version.
Firstly the packaging is inferior. Photos are faded and cover lacks that classic. However the disc has the same track listing as the CD in that it has the extra tracks which are welcomed. The sound is probably straight from CD which is ok as it does sound excellent. I do hope this is the beginning of the re-release of the catalogue in chronological order and with extra tracks. I just think more could have been made of the packaging, a gatefold sleeve perhaps with photos and information for young enthusiasts?
Worth getting just hear the dynamic sound of a young 21 year old about to make his mark on the world! The King. Not much to say, a great album. Any Elvis fan must own this.Elvis Presley, an Album by Elvis Presley. Released in on Not Now (catalog no. NOTLP; Vinyl LP). Genres: Rock & Roll.
